And the Beat Goes On
Percussion refers to any instrument that can be struck, shaken, or scraped.
They form an important part of cultural music, and it is believed that they were the first types of instruments humans invented.
While many percussion instruments are unpitched, others, such as the xylophone, timpani, or marimba, are capable of producing different notes and melodies.
Everyday articles have been made into percussion instruments, such as spoons and washboards, and all sorts of household items can be bashed and banged together very effectively to make our own percussion section.
And the human body can be used very effectively as a percussion instrument itself, as in body percussion: stomping, patting, clapping and snapping!
Percussion is called the “heartbeat” or “backbone” of a piece of music, and it sets the tempo for all other instruments and any vocals to follow.
Today, let’s share music with some of our favourite percussionists, or with unusual percussion instruments, or just music with great percussion that can’t help but get our own body percussion going!
Any genre is most welcome.
Drum roll, please…
